He married Mary born in Bolton, Lancashire about 1930. On the 1871 census James CROSS was a publican & licensed victualler in Manchester at the Mitchell Arms. James and Mary had 4 children: all living at 215 Every St., Ancoats, Manchester. John Herbert, b:1857 +-1y Prestwich, Thomas b:1859 Manchester, Alice Ann b:1861 Manchester ( Ancoats) Mary 1862, Manchester. I found the two girls on the 1881 Census boarding with John Williamson, farmer, in Bostock, Cheshire. Alice Ann Cross married Alfred Moreton, banker, from Cheshire in 1882 at Manchester Cathedral. The license reads that her father was deceased by that date. Alice Ann states her residence as being at Middlewich, Cheshire. On the 1881 census John Herbert Cross and wife Clara are living at 127 Bury New Road, Cheetham, Manchester. Both born Manchester. He is listed as a cab proprietor and Publican 24 years old. His brother Thomas 22, is listed as a gentleman at same address. Charles Norton is a visitor, married and 64 years. He is a beerhouse keeper Yorks: Pontefract. There is also listed in Northwich, Cheshire, at the Green Dragon, a James Norton 1869 –74 and a James Cross. And a Margaret Norton 1876. Rumor is the son of John Herbert immigrated to Canada.
