James Jenkins - Magdeline Morrow
Magdeline Morrow, daughter of Christopher and Sarah (Gorrall) Morrow was born in Ireland in 1846 and moved with her widowed mother and family to eastern Canada in 1875.
In 1880, her brother, Robert Henry Morrow and her sister Charlotte's husband, Robert B. Morrow, known as "Big Bob" left Canada for Dakota territory to get some land being given for settlement.
In 1881, Magdeline and her brother William left their nice brick home in eastern Canada to pick up some land also. They loaded horses, machinery, furniture and other supplies onto the boat to go down the St Lawrence River to Superior where the load was transferred to a flat car to go by rail to Wheatland. There the train was met by wagons and the supplies were brought to what is now Sec 28 in Erie Township. The country was very bare and lonely looking with only a few claim shacks scattered here and there on the prairie. The only trees were a few willows along creeks. The shack they arrived at was also very bare with no floor, nor shingles and windows covered only with mosquito netting. Water was carried from the springs in the hills. Soon the shanty was shingled, florred and more comfortable.
Magdalene took up all three grants: homestead, preemption and tree claim. On the 1893 township map, they are shown in the name of her husband, James Jenkins.
James Jenkins was born in 1858 in Ontarion, Canada. He was the son of William and A (Pickard) Jenkins, both natives of England. Over 6 feet, William had been a royal body guard for Queen Victoria of England before immigrating to Canada in 1849.
Dakota territory land sounded inviting to James also and in 1882 he set out for where the Morrows had settled expecting to return to Canada shortly. Instead he married Magdelene and settled on her homestead in Sec. in Rich township until getting a house built on his claim. Minnie Maud was born in 1883 and twins Sussie Ann and Sarah Christy in 1885. William James Albert Jenkins was born in 1888 after moving to the new house on the S.E.
