MR. W. H. MORROW
Another link has broken in connection with the history of earlier days in Kiama district with the demise of Mr. William Henry Morrow, who for some 78 years had been identified with it from manhood's estate, earning widespread respect therein also. Deceased, was 85 years of age.
His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morrow, were among the pioneers of Gerringong, and in about 1840, braved the elements of danger with their young family, that a six months' voyage from their home land meant in those early days. They left the place of their birth in County Fermanagh and sailed from Ireland in the "Orestes," arriving in Sydney to settle first on the locality now known as Potts Point, then a sparsely populated part of Sydney, where the late
Mr. Morrow had boyhood recollection of seeing deer that had been brought from England running wild on the
wooded slopes quite near at hand. His arrival at Kiama when about 8 years old was another memorable occasion
for impressing itself on his memory.
The family came down in a small coastal boat, the "Sir John Franklin,' and were landed on the beach close to the old fig tree from it, in an open boat, the steamer standing out in the bay.
After a short time in Kiama the family moved to Gerringong and after some years there, Mr. Robert Morrow, with his growing family, took up a selection at Broughton Yale, densely wooded, when that locality was thrown open for settlement, with plenty of the original owners of the land in blacks well in evidence. There they conquered the forest, brought forth the products of the soil and established fine dairy herds.
Reaching manhood, the late William Henry Morrow struck out for himself on similar lines and married Miss Elizabeth Gray, daughter of another fine old pioneer, Mr. Henry Gray, of Fountaindale. Later, he, with his wife, came to farm on the Gray Estate at Omega, at the old homestead on the farm which his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. Miller, now occupy.
Morrow early took an interestin the breeding of good dairy cattle, believing in the future of the Illawarra type, which he helped to establish. Mr. Frank McCaffrey, in his books and writings on that well-known breed, refers more than once to the quality of Mr. Morrow's herd.
Toward the end of his farming days he purchased "Alne' Bank", from the estate of the late Robert Hindmarsh, living there for some six years, and he retired from that well-known property fifteen years ago, coming to live in retirement at Kiama with his wife and two daughters.
To the last he took a keen interest in the agricultural and dairying life of the district in which he had spent some 78 years, though enfeebled health during the last four months or so made him practically an invalid, dependent on the devoted care of his daughter Lillian and granddaughter, Miss Belle Miller, who from childhood has been as another daughter in the home, giving affection and care. During his last illness, Mrs. H. Miller, his second daughter, has also been in constant attendance.
The late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morrow, who passed to their reward many years ago, had a family of six boys and seven girls, and with the passing of their son, William Henry, the last member of it has died. He is survived by one son, Mr. W. H. Morrow, of Booyong, North Coast, two married daughters in Mrs. Alfred Gray, of Eltham, North Coast, and Mrs. Harry Miller, of Omega, with Miss Lillian Morrow, of Kiama, and one daughter predeceased.
The funeral had a very representative attendance and a wealth of beautiful wreaths were sent as last tributes of respect. At the graveside sympathetic reference was made to the Christian life and character of the one laid to rest by the Rev. J. W. A. Watkinson, who, during Mr. Morrow's illness, had ministered to him kindly and consistently. Mr. E. Davies, an old friend of the family, also paid a touching tribute to the departed friend.
The late Mr. Morrow, was for a number of years church warden at St. George's, Gerringong.
