2155	The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Sat 25 Nov 1933 Page 12 ALLEGED CONSPIRACY. Wilson and Smith Discharged. Robert Arthur Wilson, 52, agent, and Robert Smith, 41, dairyman, two of the six men charged with conspiracy to efraud, as a result of an alleged property deal at Baulkham Hills, were discharged by Mr. Flynn, S.M, at the Central Police Court yesterday. The remaining four-William Henry Davis, 53, valuator, John Gallen, 43, salesman, Rupert Noel Beale, 43, manager, and William Back, 38, clerk-were committed for trial. Davis, Wilson, Smith, Gallen, and Beale were charged with having conspired to cheat and defraud William James Currie of a dairy farm at Baulkham Hills. Back was charged with having conspired with Beale, Davis, Smith, Gallen, and Wilson to cheat and defraud Currie of land at Baulkham Hills. After hearing addresses by counsel, Mr. Flynn said that he had no hesitation in discharging Wilson. As to Smith, he thought his action in the case was as consistent with innocence as with guilt. 2156	The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Sat 28 Mar 1857 Page 5 APPIN. [FROM A CORRESPONDENT.] THURSDAY, 26th March. — This day Dr. Bell, coroner for the district of Campbelltown, Liverpool, and Appin, held an inquest at the Pass Creek, about four miles from this town, on the body of John Hetherington, late an inkeeper at Wollongong, and who was drowned on the previous evening, together with an old man named Gorman, while attempting to cross the creek in a state of flood, but at the usual crossing place. It seemed Mr. Hetherington left Wollongong in company with a young man named Richard Graham, intending to go to Berrima Races, and when near to the Pass Creek, they were joined by the old man Gorman ; it was near 6 p.m. when they arrived at the Creek, but though the water was not very high, it was rushing in a perfect torrent, and without waiting to calculate the danger, Mr. Hetherington and old German, rode in together at the usual crossing place, but had not got a yard from the side when they were swept away in the current, horses and all. Young Graham saw them struggle, and instantly plunged in to render what assistance he could to Mr. Hetherington, who he saw had freed himself from his horse, and caught hold of a branch, but the current carried Graham down some way, and when he reached the place he had last seen Mr. Hetherington, he had disappeared, nor could he find the slightest traces of either of the bodies. The horses managed to get to the other side uninjured. At daylight, this morning, several people assembled at the Creek for the purpose of searching for the bodies, and, after some two or three hours, the body of Mr. Hetherington was found, about 100 yards from the crossing place, lying on its face with the right arm out of water ; Gorman's body had not been discovered up to Friday morning. The jury after hearing evidence to the foregoing effect, returned a verdict of " Accidental drowning, while attempting to cross the Pass Creek in a state of flood." And appended as a rider the following — "We desire to record our regret that such a dangerous ravine should not be rendered more safe, and easy of transit ; the way being one of considerable thoroughfare, and the risk and frequency of accidents being so incrcaeed by the suddenness with which this mountain torrent rises, and the velocity with which it rushes in time of flood ; and we would respectfully request the coroner would bring the matter under the immediate notice of the Government." [FROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT.] On Monday evening, Mr. Hetherington, innkeeper, of Wollongong, an old inhabitant of Appin, John Gorman, and another person, in company with our mailman, left Wollongong to pass this and proceed further. On their arrival at the river, between East Bargo and (this place) Appin, they found, from the late rain, that the water was deep. Mr. Hetherington and Gorman considered it possible to get over, and unfortunately made an attempt, the mailman and other persons remaining on the East Bargo side to see the success of their endeavour. They were quickly taken down the current, and appeared to be in danger. One who remained on the East Bargo side, seeing the danger of his fellow-travellers, with courage and humanity, took off his clothes, and swam, with the intention and hope of rendering assistance, but the current being so strong, he was not able to render help, and I regret to state they were both drowned. The body of Mr. Hetherington, who has left a wife and family of children, with numerous friends, to deplore their loss, was found on Thursday, an inquest held, and removed to the Bourke Hotel, Appin, from which he will be removed to Wollongong. Search has been made, and will be continued, for Gorman. The danger attendant on this crossing-place has for many years past been known and feared ; application, by memorial and petitions, have been made to the Government, praying that any sum might be allowed to make the pass safe, or to improve the place so that danger might be avoided, but we (the inhabitants of Appin) have yet to regret that our prayer has not been attended to, and the delay has been the cause of the late melancholy accident. He was one of the most respected and successful farmers, and took an active interest in everything relating to the advancement of dairying in the district. He was a prominent member of the Bega Agricultural Society and a member of the school board. 2166	The Sydney Morning Herald Saturday July 25 1925 MR. M. A. EASTWAY. The death occurred on Thursday of Mr. Matthew Albert Eastway, formerly of Eastway Brothers, at the age tot 85 years. The late Mr. Eastway had been identified with city business for more than 60 years, and was one,ot the founders of Eastway Bros. Born in Surrey, England, the late Mr. Eastway came to Australia with his family in 1840, by the sailing vessel San Francisco. The family settled in Sydney, and about 60 years ago the late Mr. Matthew Eastway, with Mr. Richard Eastway, founded the firm of Eastway Bros. Some years ago Mr. Eastway retired from the business, and had since lived a re-tired life. He is survived by two sons, Mr. Albert and Mr. Cecil Eastway, and two married daughters, Mrs. Bassingthwaite, of Woodstock, and Mrs. Powys, of Claremont (West-ern Australia). CROWTHER DEAD Former Cattle Breeder Mr. George Harcourt Crowther, who for many years was a prominent exhibitor of cattle at the Royal National, and other big shows, died at Southbrook early this morning. Mr. Crowther, whose family had come to Brisbane last Saturday from Toownomba, where they had been living for some years, had remained on the Downs to complete his work as a wheat classer. He was a son of the late Mr. Samuel Crowther, and was born at Beeleaur, near Goulburn, New South Wales, 75 years ago. He came to Queensland with his family about 30 years ago and lived at Rosewood and on the South Coast before going to Toowoomba about 20 years ago. In his younger days he was a keen sportsman and he played tennis and cricket til late in life. Mrs. Crowther survives her husband as also do seven daughters and three sons. The daughters are Mosdames A. G. Krause (Woolooga), and H. P. Robertson (Vaucluse, Sydney), and Misses May, Vera, Elsie, Alice and Edna, and the sons Cecil (Wamuran) , George (Manumbar), and Walter (Toowoomba). Mr Samuel Crowther, of Brisbane, is a brother. 2172	The Wollondilly Press (NSW : 1906 - 1914) Wednesday 17 August 1910 p 4 The Late Mr. Cupitt. The late Mr. Sydney C Cupitt, whose death occurred at Bowral on Friday morning last, was the youngest son of the late Mr. James Cupitt, of Mittagong, and was a single man, 32 years of age. He was a native of Mittagong, residing in this district until five years ago, when, apparently strong and healthy, he left for the Richmond River. Recently he returned to Bowral, broken in health and a severe form of Bright's disease, with other complications, left recovery hopeless, death coming as a happy release to his sufferings. During his illness he received the loving attention of his aged mother and his sister (Mrs. E Hines), and much sympathy is expressed for them and other relatives in their bereavement. 2178	This John Eyre married in 1742 Jane Waller of Castle Waller in County Limerick. Burke’s ‘Landed Gentry’ state that he had an only child, John, who predeceased him, dying in 1743, while Rev. Hartigan states that he had a daughter Jane, who died young.[lii] (Hartigan, however, gives this John Eyre as younger than his brother Giles.) 2186	Transcription of document added to Ancestry by Kay Whelan 16 Sep 2012 Alexander McKenzie North Erradale, Ross-shire, Scotland 1798-1868 Alexander "Mhor" McKenzie was born in North Errandale, Gairloch Parish, Ross-shire, Scotland on November 19, 1798. North Erradale is a remote small crofting village on the shore of Loch Gairloch about five miles northeast of Gairloch. His parents were Jessie McDonald and Duncan McKenzie, both of Ross-shire. The family moved to Melvaig, about five miles north, when he was a young boy. He was part of the Scottish Highlanders community that emigrated to the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia following the Reverand Norman McLeod (see the account of the Waipu Highlanders on the following pages). He married Anne Fraser in Nova Scotia sometime in 1826. Between 1826 and 1844 Alex and Anne had eight children; William, Duncan, James, Christina, Donald, Jessie, Barbara Ann and Murdoch. The Alex McKenzies had a 600-acre farm on Bouldarderie Island. The minister on Bouldarderie Island was James Fraser a strong opponent of Norman McLeod's	McKenzie, Alexander (I5468)
2187	Transcription of document added to Ancestry by Tony Fisher 11 May 2015 In the year of 1798 my Great Grandfather Alexander McKenzie was born, it is believed his parents were tenant farmers. At this time the Highland Clearances were in progress where tenant farmers were being forced off their land in favour of sheep and deer. Many of the Clans looked to new lands for a future. In 1818 Captain Hector McKenzie was enlisting passengers for America, a number of single men went in this group. In July the Brigantine "perserverance" (Capt: McKenzie) arrived at Loch Inver, took 150 passengers aboard and sailed for Stornaway being the nearest custom house and cleared for Pictou, Nova Scotia. After a passage of six weeks they arrived at Pictou on August 29th, 1818. It is believed that Alexander McKenzie sailed with this group, he would be a young man of 20 years. As there are quite a number of McKenzie families it is hard to tell them apart so each had a "nickname" in our case Alex's was (Mhor). Alexander met and married Annie Fraser and raised a family of eight children, seven of them came to New Zealand, one of them (Donald) stayed in Nova Scotia. The Revd. Norman McLeod had sailed on a previous ship he had a great bearing on the settlers in Nova Scotia and Waipu. He was the Chirch and Settlement leader for most of the Scots. In the case of the "Breadalbane" the Revd J.M. Fraser led this group and he did not agree with the Revd. McLeod, it seems that there was some firstion between them for a number of years, in Nova Scotia and Waipu.	McKenzie, Alexander (I5468)
