Death of a Pioneer Resident.
It is with regret that we have to record the death of one of the oldest residents of the district, in the person of Mr. James Cupitt, of William-Street, Mittagong, which took place at an early hour yesterday (Monday) morning, after a lengthy illness. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. George Cupitt, of England, and Windsor, New South Wales. He was a native of the colony, having been born at Windsor on November 10th, 1822, and he would therefore have been 80 years of age on Monday next. He
came to this district some 60 years ago, and as resided here ever since.
For about 25 years he lived in Bowral, and in the early days, before the advent of the iron horse, was a rather extensive carrier between Sydney and Braidwood. Subsequently he removed to Lower Mittagong where for thirty five years he conducted farming operations, but failing health compelled him a short time ago to abandon these pursuits and settle down in Mittagong.
For some months past he has been suffering from dropsy, for which he was treated by Dr. Middleton, but despite medical skill and careful nursing the end came yesterday morning.
The deceased was a hard-working, genial, and straightforward man, and had made many friends during his long residence in the district. He leaves a widow and grown up family of seven sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. All his children except two were at the bedside at the time of his death. The funeral will take place this afternoon, when the remains will be interred in the Church of England Cemetery at Lower Mittagong. Mr. Beavan, Bowral, is the undertaker.
